Important Update about our Downtown Lighting

Dear Benicia Downtown Business Owners,

The Downtown Benicia Alliance (DBA) is committed to maintaining and enhancing the vibrancy of our downtown area. As a nonprofit organization funded through the business improvement district (BID) fee collected via the City’s Business License Tax, we are writing to share an important update about our downtown lighting.

For years, we have proudly supported the tree lights on First Street. However, rising maintenance costs, challenges with growing trees, and increasing incidents of vandalism have made it financially unsustainable to continue our current lighting program as it is.

Good news!

We are excited to announce a lighting solution that not only addresses these challenges but also improves our downtown:

• Phase One

(Currently Being Implemented): Pole-mounted lights that provide essential lighting for sidewalks, businesses and pedestrians

• Phase Two

(Completion by End of March): Decorative swagged bulb lighting strung between poles, adding a charming and inviting atmosphere to downtown Benicia

While we understand the previous tree lights are beloved to our businesses and community, this new lighting initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to sustainably maintaining our downtown’s character and safety. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to seeing our downtown shine in a new light.

Sincerely,
Downtown Benicia Alliance Board of Directors
